Course Summary

This self-paced online course provides foundational knowledge in rope rescue awareness, aligned with the latest standards of NFPA 1006, NFPA 1670, and NFPA 2500. It is designed for emergency responders, safety personnel, and other individuals who may be first on the scene of an incident involving elevated or below-grade rescue environments.

Participants will learn to recognize rope rescue hazards, understand their role in a rope rescue incident, and identify the capabilities and limitations of rope rescue operations. The course emphasizes scene safety, hazard assessment, resource activation, and support functions without requiring participants to perform hands-on technical rescue tasks.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the scope and limitations of rope rescue operations.
  • Identify common rope rescue environments and hazards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic rope rescue equipment and terminology.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of awareness-level personnel in accordance with NFPA 1006, 1670, and 2500.
  • Apply safety protocols and recognize when to activate a technical rescue team.

This awareness-level training meets the requirements of NFPA 1006 Chapter 5 (General Requirements) and Chapter 6 (Rope Rescue), Awareness Level, NFPA 1670 (Organizational Standards for Technical Rescue), Awareness Level, and NFPA 2500 (Standard for Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents and Life Safety Rope and Equipment).
